Youth in Government Day

Youth in Government Day gives BCSD students the opportunity to meet with members of their government in Albany, NY, and discuss key issues like public education funding and equity. The students are selected based on leadership, academic achievements, and community involvement.  This immersive experience not only provides a deeper understanding of government and advocacy but also inspires students to become active voices for change in their communities.

At 2023 Youth in Government Day the students toured the NYS Capitol Building and engaged with Senator Robert Jackson and Senator Mark Walczyk. They experienced the history rich environments of the Governor’s Red Room, the War Room, Senate Chambers, Assembly Chambers, and all the educational exhibits displayed. They also had the opportunity to view the Senate in session from the Senate Gallery, and the Assembly in session from the Assembly Gallery. They even watched the Assembly debate a Labor Law amendment.

During their visit the students championed an important cause — advocating for the removal of the per-pupil funding cap, as recommended by the Board of Regents and supported by the Governor. This change was vital to sustain the impactful work of LPP. Through their efforts, students showcased the power of youth advocacy, achieving their goal and leaving a lasting impression on NYS leadership.

Youth in Government Day exemplifies how education and civic engagement can drive meaningful change, empowering students to lead with purpose.
