Binghamton University LPP Students Advocate for Their Future at 2025 Advocacy Day
Binghamton University Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) students made their voices heard at the 2025 Advocacy Day in Albany, NY. Representing their schools and communities, they immersed themselves in two days of learning, networking, and hands-on advocacy at the heart of New York State’s government.
Their journey began with a visit to the University at Albany, where Binghamton High School (BHS) students had a special opportunity to connect with Ruby Moncrieft, a 2023 BHS Liberty alum and former LPP Advocacy Day representative. Moncrieft, who also attended the event in 2022, engaged students in thoughtful discussions about their futures, the importance of civic engagement, and how to find “healthy fun” in their lives.
The students also toured the Capitol building, where they experienced New York’s legislative process firsthand. They explored the Hall of Governors, the famous Red Room, and the Senate Chambers Gallery, witnessing debates, voting sessions, and the passing of bills, amendments, and resolutions. Along the way, they observed rallies, learned about the role of the press in shaping policy, and gained a deeper understanding of the First Amendment in action.
A highlight of the trip was meeting with key legislators. BHS students had dedicated time with Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Senator Lea Webb, discussing education, advocacy, and issues impacting their communities. They even had a chance encounter with Binghamton City Councilman Nate Hotchkiss, who was in Albany for separate advocacy efforts. Councilman Hotchkiss stopped to chat with the students and take a photo, showing them firsthand the impact of local leadership.
Susquehanna Valley (SV) High School students met with Assemblyman Joe Angelino, who later shared his impressions of the group:
"Today I met with a great group of students from the Binghamton University Liberty Partnerships Program. They were at the Capitol for the 2025 Youth in Government Day. I heard them tell of all the great things they learn as part of the Liberty Partnerships Program. Such things as responsibility, accountability and management. Very mature topics for underclassmen in school."
Beyond their legislative meetings, students engaged with peers from other Liberty programs across the state and connected with representatives from opportunity programs such as CSTEP, HESC, HEOP, and EOP.
To cap off their trip, students visited the New York State Museum, where they explored exhibits on the state’s rich human and natural history. It was the perfect way to reflect on the past while looking toward their future.
